The greatest risk I see to a keto diet is cutting out or severely reducing the foods that we know from decades of research have extensive health benefits, such as whole grains, legumes, fruits, and certain vegetables.
The keto diet does require a low percentage of carb intake, but it makes up for it by allowing dieters to eat higher fat content and adequate protein. But the diet is a high-fat diet that can increases cholesterol levels, a risk factor for heart disease.
What to eat on the keto diet will depend on your personal goals and health, but so long as you focus on real foods, it can be a very nutritious diet.

Some advocates of the keto diet will describe it as a way to turn the body into a fat-burning machine and when it comes to weight loss, there is no question that the keto diet does work in the short term.
Much of the weight loss in the initial stages of a keto diet is water weight because carbohydrate stores in the body carry water molecules with them. It does a pretty good job of preserving muscle mass during weight loss, improving overall body composition, and preventing metabolic rate from plummeting.
